Why the water pump goes in at the same time

On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Replacing the belt requires removing everything down to the pump. The pump costs $80 to $200 on its own; fitting it later as a separate job means repeating the entire timing belt labour, which is $400 to $800.

Replacing the pump pre-emptively at the belt service adds maybe $120 to the parts cost but saves doing the whole job twice. We recommend it every time.

Water pumps fail at around 150,000 to 200,000 km typically. If yours is close to that range, replacement with the belt is strongly recommended.

What is a timing belt and why it matters

The timing belt synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft rotation. In a four-stroke engine, this timing must be exact — the pistons and valves are doing a choreographed dance. If the belt breaks or jumps a tooth:

  • Interference engine: Pistons and valves collide. Bent valves, damaged pistons, sometimes cylinder head damage. Repair cost $3,000 to $8,000.
  • Non-interference engine: The engine stops running but nothing physically collides. Replace the belt and the car starts again.
  • Almost every modern engine is an interference design: The last time a mainstream non-interference petrol engine was built was the early 2000s. Assume yours is interference unless your manual specifically says otherwise.

When to replace

Check your owner’s manual for the specific interval. Common specifications:

  • Toyota (older models with belts — most modern Toyotas use chains): 100,000 km or 7 years.
  • Mazda (older models): 100,000 km or 8 years.
  • Honda (older Civic, Accord): 105,000 km or 7 years.
  • Hyundai / Kia (petrol models with belts): 90,000 to 100,000 km.
  • Subaru boxer engines: 125,000 km specifically. Critical on interference EJ engines.
  • Older Nissan Navara D22 2.5 diesel: 100,000 km.
  • VW / Audi / Skoda (older TDI diesels, 1.8T petrols): 100,000 to 120,000 km.
  • BMW M47/M57 diesel, older N42/N46 petrol: 120,000 km.

Time-based matters as much as distance. A belt left in service for 10 years without use still ages, cracks, and loses strength. If your low-km car is past the time interval, replace the belt.

Timing chain vs timing belt

Most manufacturers have shifted to timing chains in recent years. Chains last longer (often 200,000 km or more), don’t need scheduled replacement in most cases, but can stretch with age and cause their own problems.

Belt = scheduled replacement at 100,000 km, deterministic.

Chain = “lifetime” in the manufacturer’s eyes but in reality 200,000+ km with risk of stretch, guide wear, or tensioner failure.

If your car has a timing chain, you don’t need regular replacement, but you should listen for rattle on cold startup (chain stretching, tensioner failing) and get it looked at if it appears. A failed timing chain causes the same catastrophic engine damage as a failed belt.

Signs of a failing timing belt

By design, you shouldn’t see warning signs — the belt either works or it breaks. But occasionally there are warnings:

  • Ticking or squealing from the timing cover. Tensioner or idler pulley failing. Replace everything before the belt itself fails.
  • Oil leak from the front of the engine. Cam or crank seal failing. Replace with the belt; labour is identical.
  • Visible cracks or glazing on the belt. If you can see the belt through the timing cover and it looks glazed or cracked, replace immediately.
  • Rough running or misfire after a hard start. Occasionally the belt has jumped a tooth. Tow the car — do not drive it.

The replacement process

  • Preparation: Car on the hoist, engine cooled, battery disconnected, coolant partially drained.
  • Access: Remove components blocking access to the timing covers (engine mounts, accessory belts, sometimes the whole front of the engine).
  • Lock timing: Engine rotated to TDC, crankshaft and camshaft locked in position with factory or aftermarket tools. This prevents any movement that would throw off the timing.
  • Remove old components: Belt, tensioner, idlers, water pump (if applicable) all come out.
  • Inspect: Cam and crank seals checked for leaks. Any seal showing signs of failure is replaced while access is easy.
  • Install new kit: New belt, tensioner, idlers, pump. All torqued to spec.
  • Verify timing: Engine rotated by hand through two full revolutions to confirm no binding, valve-piston contact, or timing misalignment.
  • Reassemble: All removed components refitted. Coolant refilled. Battery reconnected.
  • Start and road test: Listen for noise, check timing on a scan tool, confirm smooth running.

A proper timing belt job takes 4 to 8 hours depending on engine. If someone quotes you 2 hours, they’re cutting corners.

Why we don't reuse tensioners and idlers

Tensioners and idler pulleys have sealed bearings. They last about the same lifespan as the belt — 100,000 km or so. A reused tensioner is probably 50 to 80 percent through its life, and will fail long before the new belt does. Full timing kits cost maybe $80 to $150 more than a belt alone, and they cover the whole assembly with fresh bearings. Always worth it.
