Signs your DPF needs attention
- The DPF or exhaust filter warning light is on, or keeps coming back
- The engine feels flat, or the vehicle has dropped into limp mode
- Regenerations are happening more often than usual. Depending on the vehicle, you might notice the cooling fan running after you switch off, a higher idle or a hot smell from the exhaust
- Fuel use has crept up
- Most of your driving is short trips or stop-start traffic, so the filter rarely gets hot enough to clean itself
What a diesel particulate filter does
Your DPF sits in the exhaust and traps soot before it reaches the tailpipe. It's designed to clean itself by burning that soot off, which is called regeneration. Regeneration needs heat, and that usually means a decent run at highway speed.
Short trips around the western suburbs don't give it that chance. A faulty injector, a sticking EGR valve or a bad sensor can also make the engine produce more soot than the filter can deal with. When soot builds up faster than it burns off, the warning light comes on.
DPF diagnosis: what we check first
Every DPF job starts with an assessment, because the right fix depends on why the filter blocked up in the first place.
- We scan for fault codes and read live data such as soot load, DPF pressure and exhaust temperatures, where your vehicle reports them
- We look for what's causing the build-up: injectors, EGR, sensors, the air intake, oil level and how the vehicle is being driven
- We check the filter and exhaust for damage
- We tell you whether cleaning is likely to work or whether the filter needs replacing, before any work starts
How our BG DPF cleaning works
We use BG's DPF and emissions system service. It's done on the vehicle, so the filter doesn't need to come off.
BG's equipment feeds a cleaner into the air intake, which removes deposits from the intake and emissions system. A controlled regeneration then burns the soot out of the DPF. BG products are made in the USA.
Once we've assessed your vehicle, we'll tell you how long the job takes and what it costs.
When cleaning isn't the right fix
We'd rather tell you straight. Cleaning deals with soot. It won't repair a filter that's cracked or melted, and it can't remove ash, the residue that doesn't burn and builds up over many kilometres. A filter in that state needs off-vehicle cleaning or a replacement.
If something upstream caused the blockage, such as a leaking injector, the DPF will block again unless that's fixed too. If we find a problem like that, we'll explain it and quote it separately.
DPF cleaning vs DPF replacement
A new DPF is one of the more expensive parts on a modern diesel. When cleaning is suitable, it usually costs far less, which is why we assess first.
The cost depends on your vehicle and what the assessment finds. Call 07 3279 3228 for a quote.
Diesel vehicles we work on
We work on diesel utes, 4WDs, SUVs, vans and passenger cars, including common DPF-equipped models like the Toyota HiLux and Prado, Ford Ranger and Everest, Isuzu D-Max and MU-X, Mazda BT-50 and Nissan Navara. If your diesel isn't listed, give us a call and ask.
How to help prevent DPF problems
- Give the vehicle a steady run at highway speed regularly, especially if you mostly do short trips
- If your vehicle shows that it's regenerating, try not to switch off until it finishes
- Use the engine oil your manufacturer specifies. DPF-equipped diesels usually need a low-ash oil
- Keep up with servicing and get warning lights checked early. A problem caught early is usually a cheaper fix
Book your next log book service with us and we'll check the DPF while the vehicle is in.

Frequently asked questions
How long can I drive with the DPF warning light on?
Book in soon. Some vehicles will clear the light after a steady drive at highway speed, and your owner's manual will tell you if yours does. If the light stays on, flashes or the vehicle goes into limp mode, stop driving it hard and book an assessment. Driving on with a blocked filter can turn a clean into a replacement.
How do I clear the DPF warning light?
Clearing the light with a scan tool doesn't clear the filter. If a highway drive doesn't fix it, the filter needs a forced regeneration, a clean or, in some cases, replacement. Our assessment tells you which one.
Is DPF cleaning cheaper than replacing the DPF?
Usually, yes, when cleaning is suitable. A damaged or ash-loaded filter can't be cleaned on the vehicle, and we'll tell you that before you spend money on a clean that won't last.
Can you remove or delete my DPF?
No. Removing or disabling a DPF on a road-registered vehicle is illegal in Queensland, and we don't do it.
Will DPF work affect my new car warranty?
If your vehicle is still under its new car warranty, talk to us first and we'll go through your options. Our guide on servicing and your warranty explains how servicing at an independent workshop works.
Do I need to book?
Yes. Call 07 3279 3228 or 0469 028 794, or book online, and we'll arrange a time for your assessment.
