Car AC Repair and Aircon Regas in Brisbane — Jindalee Workshop
Brisbane summer punishes weak air conditioning. If your car’s AC is blowing lukewarm air, cycling on and off, or smelling musty when you turn it on, you need it looked at before December hits. Ultimate Car Expert is an ARC-licensed AC workshop (licence number AU66890), which means we are legally authorised to handle refrigerant — and the difference between a regas done right and a regas done wrong is whether the gas stays in the system for three years or three weeks.

Aircon regas pricing
- Standard regas (R134a, older vehicles) — from $199
- Regas with R1234yf (post-2017 cars, most modern vehicles) — from $329
- Leak detection and pressure test — from $129 (credited back if you regas with us)
- AC diagnostic scan — from $89
- Compressor replacement — quoted after diagnosis (typical range $850 to $1,800 including gas)
- Evaporator or condenser replacement — quoted on inspection
The difference between R134a and R1234yf matters. R1234yf is a newer, more environmentally friendly refrigerant mandated on most cars built from 2017 onwards. It is roughly three times the cost of R134a, and the equipment to handle it legally is expensive. Workshops that charge “regas from $99” are either using the old gas in a new system (which damages it), not actually regassing properly, or hiding the real price until you arrive. We quote the real number up front.
Signs your car AC needs service pricing
- Air comes out cool, not cold: Vent temperature should be 5–8°C on a hot day. If yours is 12–15°C, the system is low on gas or has a leak.
- AC cycles on and off quickly: The compressor is engaging and disengaging because system pressure is out of spec. Usually a low-gas symptom.
- Musty or sour smell when AC first comes on: Mould growing on the evaporator. Needs a cabin filter replacement and an evaporator sanitisation treatment.
- Loud squeal or rattle when you turn the AC on: Compressor clutch or bearing failing. Expensive to ignore — a failing clutch will eventually seize and take the drive belt with it.
- Water pooling inside the cabin on the passenger side: Blocked drain from the evaporator. Easy fix if caught early, a wet carpet and mould problem if left alone.
- AC was cold, now it's not — no warning: Usually a sudden leak. Could be a fitting, a hose, or the condenser (front-mounted, vulnerable to stone chips).
Our AC repair process
- Diagnosis: We connect a gauge manifold, read the pressures, scan for codes, and test the system under load. We tell you what's actually wrong, not what's easy to sell.
- Leak test if needed: If the system is low on gas and you don't know why, a recharge alone is throwing money away — it will leak again. We add UV dye and pressurise the system, then inspect with a UV lamp to find the leak source.
- Repair: Most leaks are at O-rings, seals, or the condenser. Some are at the compressor shaft seal. We quote the repair separately, you approve it, then we do the work.
- Evacuate and recharge: We pull the system down to a deep vacuum (removes moisture, which is what destroys AC systems over time), hold the vacuum to confirm integrity, then charge with the exact manufacturer-specified gas and oil volumes.
- Performance test: Vent temperature at idle, vent temperature at 2,000 rpm, vent temperature after 15 minutes of operation. We show you the numbers.
What we will not do
We will not “top up” a system that has a leak: Every time you put gas into a leaking system, that gas ends up in the atmosphere. That’s illegal for us and bad for you. We find the leak first.
We will not mix refrigerants: R134a and R1234yf are not compatible. Mixing them destroys compressors. Some cheaper workshops cross the streams to save money — we don’t.
We will not use stop-leak additives: They block leaks by blocking the whole system. Repairs after stop-leak cost three times what they would have cost before.
Why a proper regas costs more than a cheap one
An ARC-licensed AC workshop has recovery machines for both refrigerant types, gauge manifolds, leak detectors, UV lamps, a vacuum pump, and the training to use all of it. The gas itself (particularly R1234yf) is expensive. Doing it properly means refrigerant stays in the system for three to five years. Doing it cheaply means you’re back in six months. The cheap option is almost always more expensive in the end.
When to service your AC
Every 2 to 3 years for a regas and system check, even if it’s still cold. Refrigerant naturally seeps out at a very low rate through hoses and seals — that’s normal. The AC getting weaker over time is inevitable without periodic service.
If you notice any of the symptoms above, bring it in sooner. Catching a leak at the O-ring stage is a $200 fix. Catching it at the compressor-destroyed stage is a $1,500 fix.

FAQs
How long does a regas take?
About 60 to 90 minutes if there’s no leak. Longer if we need to leak-test first.
How long will the regas last?
Three to five years in a healthy system. If it leaks out in 6 to 12 months, there’s a leak we need to find.
Do I need to bring my own gas or oil?
No. We supply everything. The price quoted includes gas, oil, vacuum and performance test.
My car is from 2019. Which gas does it take?
Almost certainly R1234yf. We check the sticker under the bonnet to be sure before we start.
Can you repair the AC while I wait?
A straightforward regas, yes. A full repair involving compressor or condenser replacement usually needs a half day, sometimes a full day.
The dealer quoted $2,400 for a regas. Is that normal?
It is high. Most R1234yf regasses from an independent workshop sit between $300 and $450. If no leak or repair is needed, $2,400 is worth getting a second opinion.
