Check Engine Light On — What It Means and What to Do
A check engine light is your car’s way of saying something is outside normal parameters. It could be trivial (loose fuel cap) or serious (misfire damaging the catalytic converter). Ignoring it is always a bad bet. Ultimate Car Expert runs a free diagnostic scan so you know what you’re dealing with Dealer vs Independent Mechanic Brisbane.
Solid light vs flashing light
Solid (steady) check engine light. Something is wrong but not immediately catastrophic. Book in within a week.
Flashing check engine light. Misfire in progress. Damage happening now. Stop driving, arrange a tow or drive directly to the nearest workshop at reduced speed.
Continuing to drive with a flashing check engine light destroys the catalytic converter (replacement $700 to $2,800) and can damage oxygen sensors ($189 to $389 each).
Most common causes
- Loose or faulty fuel cap. The ECU detects a leak in the evaporative emissions system. Tighten the cap, drive 50 km, light often clears on its own.
- Failing oxygen sensor. Common at 100,000+ km. $189 to $389 fitted.
- Catalytic converter efficiency low (P0420/P0430). Cat failing. Can be fixed by replacing the cat, but sometimes caused by an upstream problem (bad O2 sensor, misfire, oil burning). Diagnosis first.
- Mass airflow sensor (MAF) dirty or failing. Often cleanable for under $100, replacement $289 to $489.
- Ignition coil failure. Causes a misfire. From $180 per coil fitted.
- Spark plug worn out. Cheap fix if that’s the only problem. $89 to $189 for a set of plugs fitted.
- EGR valve stuck or dirty. Common on diesels. Cleaning $229, replacement $389 to $889.
- DPF overloaded (diesels). Forced regeneration $389. Chemical clean or replacement if worse.
- Emissions-related issue. Various, depending on code.
- Major engine issue. Rarely the cause, but possible — low compression, timing issue, serious mechanical fault.
Why a generic code reader isn't enough
Auto parts stores offer free code reads. They tell you the code (e.g. P0171 = system too lean) but not why. P0171 could be:
- A vacuum leak ($150 to $400 to fix)
- A dirty MAF sensor ($150 to clean, $400 to replace)
- A failing fuel pump ($489 to $989)
- Low fuel pressure (various causes)
- A faulty oxygen sensor upstream
Professional diagnostic tools read live data, monitor sensors under load, and identify root cause rather than guessing. Our diagnostic is $89 (refunded toward repair cost) and we tell you what’s actually wrong, not just the code.
What the scan actually checks
- Current fault codes: Car Won’t Start Brisbane
- Historical codes (from recent past)
- Live sensor data (fuel trims, O2 sensor voltage, ignition timing, coolant temp)
- Freeze-frame data (conditions when the fault occurred)
- Readiness monitors (whether the ECU has completed self-tests)
This lets us confirm the actual cause before quoting a repair.
Can I keep driving?
- Solid light, car runs normally: yes, for a short period, but book in within a week.
- Solid light, car runs rough: no, book in immediately.
- Flashing light: no. Damage is happening.
- Lights plus other warning (oil, temp, ABS): stop, assess, often means a tow.

Can you scan my car for free?
First scan is $89, refunded against any repair you book with us. We don’t do free scans as standalone service — it takes 30+ minutes with professional equipment.
Will the light reset itself?
Sometimes, if the fault clears (loose fuel cap tightened, emissions readiness re-set). Usually not.
Can I clear the light with a scan tool?
Yes, but the fault returns next time the ECU detects the problem. Doesn’t fix the underlying issue.
How urgent is a check engine light?
Depends on the code. Some are trivial, some serious. Diagnostic tells you which.
Will a check engine light fail me at roadworthy?
Yes. A stored fault code is an automatic fail on a Queensland safety certificate.
