What the inspection covers
It’s a 150-plus point check. The structure:
- Engine and drivetrain: Compression test, oil leaks, coolant condition, timing belt or chain condition, idle quality, smoke from exhaust (cold and warm), fluid condition in the transmission, CV joint condition, differential noise on road test.
- Brakes and suspension: Pad and rotor thickness, fluid condition, hoses, shock condition (bounce test and visual for leaks), bushes, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, steering rack play.
- Body, chassis and structure: Rust in structural areas, previous panel repairs (paint thickness gauge tells us), accident damage, chassis rail straightness, underbody corrosion, jack point integrity.
- Electrics and diagnostics: All warning lights, battery condition and cranking amps, charging output, every interior switch and button, infotainment, reverse camera, sensors, airbags (we scan for crash data), ABS scan.
- Tyres and wheels: Tread depth on all four, date codes (tyres over six years old are suspect), sidewall damage, alignment indicators (uneven wear), spare tyre condition, jack and tools present.
- Road test: 20-minute drive mixing suburban, highway and stop-start. We listen for noises, feel for vibrations, check every gear shift, test cruise control, test the air con at temperature.
- Paperwork check: We verify the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the registration and the sale paperwork. Stolen and written-off cars show up here.
When the mobile inspection makes sense
If the seller won’t let you take the car to a workshop, that’s already a bad sign. But sometimes it’s genuinely inconvenient — the car is in Ipswich, the Gold Coast, at the seller’s work, or a private sale where the seller can’t drive. We bring a mobile hoist, diagnostic scanner and full tool kit. You get the same 150-point report, just done in a driveway.
Mobile inspections are slower (no workshop hoist) and slightly more expensive, but the trade-off is you see cars you otherwise could not.

What a real inspection report looks like
A sample report from last month: 2018 Toyota Hilux, 140,000 km, seller asking $34,000. The inspection found a pending timing chain replacement (normal wear at that km, $1,800 job), oil leak from the rear main seal ($1,200 to fix), and previous front-end accident damage revealed by the paint gauge. Buyer went back to the seller with the report, negotiated $3,500 off the price, and bought the car with eyes open. That’s a good outcome.
Not every report saves you money. Sometimes the car is exactly as described and we tell you to buy it. That’s equally valuable.
When NOT to get a pre-purchase inspection
If you’re buying from a licensed dealer with statutory warranty, and the car is under 10 years old with under 160,000 km, the dealer carries three months of warranty risk anyway. An inspection is still useful but less critical.
Everywhere else — private sale, online sale, interstate purchase — a pre-purchase inspection is one of the best $249 you’ll ever spend.
FAQs
How long does the inspection take?
About 90 minutes in the workshop, 2 hours at a mobile location. You get the report within 24 hours.
Can I be there during the inspection?
Yes, and we encourage it. You see what we see, and you can ask questions in real time.
Will the seller agree to a pre-purchase inspection?
Any seller worth buying from will. If a private seller refuses, walk away — they are hiding something.
Do you check if the car is written off or stolen?
We check the VIN against the visible plate and the paperwork. We recommend you also run a separate PPSR check yourself ($2 from the government) before purchase.
What if the inspection reveals a problem after I've already put down a deposit?
Most sale contracts include a “subject to satisfactory inspection” clause. If yours does, you can pull out and get your deposit back. Always include this clause before handing over any money.
