Exhaust Repair Brisbane

Exhaust Repair in Brisbane — Jindalee Workshop

A loud exhaust is not just annoying. Exhaust leaks let carbon monoxide into the cabin, raise fuel consumption, trigger check-engine lights, and fail roadworthy inspections. Ultimate Car Expert repairs exhaust systems at our Jindalee workshop — from a rusted-out muffler on a 15-year-old Commodore to a cracked cat converter on a late-model Hilux.

Signs your exhaust needs work

  • Sudden loud noise that wasn’t there yesterday. Exhaust leak — usually a rust hole in a muffler or pipe, or a cracked flex joint. Gets louder over time if ignored.
  • Rattling under the car at idle. Loose heat shield or broken exhaust mount. Cheap fix, annoying if ignored.
  • Ticking noise from the engine at cold start that fades as it warms up. Exhaust manifold leak — metal expanding as it warms up closes the leak temporarily.
  • Smell of exhaust in the cabin. Carbon monoxide risk. Leak is somewhere between the engine and the rear tailpipe, letting fumes enter the cabin. Do not ignore — fix promptly.
  • Loss of power, especially on hills. Blocked catalytic converter or DPF. Back-pressure strangling the engine.
  • Check engine light with P0420 or P0430 codes. Catalytic converter efficiency below threshold. Cat failing.
  • DPF warning light (diesel). Particulate filter needs regeneration or cleaning. Don’t ignore — continued driving can destroy the DPF.
  • Blue or black smoke from the tailpipe. Engine issue more than exhaust — burning oil (blue) or running rich (black). We diagnose both.
  • Rust visible on the muffler. Brisbane’s humidity rots exhausts from the inside out. Visible external rust means internal rust is much worse.

Aftermarket vs genuine exhaust parts

  • Muffler replacement. Aftermarket is fine. Quality suppliers (Redback, Genie, Walker) make mufflers as good as genuine for half the price. We use these.
  • Catalytic converter. Depends. On most cars, quality aftermarket cats are legal and work well — we fit these to save $1,000 to $2,000. Some high-performance or European cars require genuine cats to satisfy the OBD system; we check before quoting.
  • Pipes and mid-sections. Aftermarket mandrel-bent pipe and universal clamps, or custom-fabricated in-house for odd shapes.
  • Flex pipes. Quality aftermarket stainless steel flex. Lasts as long as genuine.
  • Diesel particulate filters. Usually genuine or OEM-equivalent. Aftermarket DPFs exist but quality varies — we use known brands.

The catalytic converter story

Catalytic converters contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium — precious metals that have skyrocketed in value. This has caused two problems:

Cat theft: Thieves cut cats off parked vehicles with angle grinders, sell them for $150 to $800 depending on the vehicle. Hilux, Prado, and Landcruiser cats are the most-stolen in Brisbane. If your car suddenly sounds like a tractor and the noise is coming from under the middle of the car, check whether your cat is still there.

Cat prices: A genuine Toyota Hilux catalytic converter is over $2,500 now. Aftermarket equivalents are $700 to $1,100. Where legal, aftermarket is the cost-effective choice. We fit anti-theft shields on request for high-risk vehicles. Aircon Regas Cost Brisbane

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) problems

Every modern diesel has a DPF. It traps soot from combustion, then periodically burns it off in a process called regeneration. For regeneration to work, the engine needs to run at highway speeds for long enough to reach the right temperature. Car Overheating Brisbane

Brisbane-based diesels that live on short suburban trips often can’t complete regeneration. Soot builds up, DPF warning light comes on, car goes into limp mode.

  • First step — forced regeneration: We connect diagnostic equipment and force the DPF through a regen cycle. Works for partially-loaded DPFs.
  • Second step — chemical clean: Additive and off-car cleaning. Works for DPFs that are heavily loaded but not damaged.
  • Third step — replacement: If the DPF is cracked, melted, or the substrate is destroyed, it must be replaced. Expensive.
  • Prevention: If you own a diesel and only do short trips, take it for a 30-minute highway drive once a month. Cheaper than a DPF replacement.
  • Legal note: Removing or “deleting” the DPF is illegal in Queensland. We do not remove DPFs. Workshops that offer DPF delete are putting your registration at risk.

Exhaust system inspection

Free with any booking. We put the car on the hoist and check:

  • Every joint, flange, and weld for leaks
  • Heat shield condition
  • Hanger and mount condition
  • Cat converter condition (visual and sometimes tapping for rattle of broken substrate)
  • DPF status on diesels
  • Oxygen sensor connections
  • Muffler condition (external rust, internal rust detected by tapping)
  • Exhaust gas smell at the tailpipe (rich, lean, normal)

If something needs attention, we quote. No pressure.

Heat shield rattle — common, annoying, cheap to fix

The sheet-metal heat shields covering exhaust components rust and crack with age. A loose heat shield rattles at specific RPMs — you think the car is falling apart, but it’s just a stamped steel panel vibrating.

Fix: often a simple weld or a new clamp. Sometimes removal if the shield is no longer needed (on cars where it was installed to protect components now removed).

Cost: $80 to $200 usually. Don’t let someone charge you $500 for a rattling heat shield.

Why a stainless steel exhaust lasts longer

Factory exhaust systems on Australian-market cars are usually aluminised steel. They rust out in 8 to 15 years in Brisbane humidity. Stainless steel aftermarket mufflers last 20 years plus. If you’re planning to keep your car long-term, a stainless muffler is worth the extra $150.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short distance to a workshop, yes, if the noise is not accompanied by exhaust smell in the cabin. If there’s a fume smell, don’t drive it — carbon monoxide is serious.

Muffler replacement: 1 to 2 hours. Cat replacement: 2 to 4 hours. Full system: half a day.

Parts fitted to replace worn components are fine. A full performance aftermarket exhaust on a new car may affect warranty claims on related components. We don’t fit performance exhausts on cars still under manufacturer warranty unless the customer understands the risk.

Louder exhaust systems exist, but anything loud enough to be noticeable is usually close to or over the legal noise limit in QLD. We don’t fit modifications that fail roadworthy.

Usually yes — either the cat has failed (can’t reduce emissions enough) or the upstream oxygen sensor is lying to the ECU. Diagnostic first to confirm which.
