A brake squeaking is one of the most common complaints we get. Sometimes it’s a warning sign of worn pads. Sometimes it’s cosmetic and nothing to worry about. The noise tells us which.
What kind of squeak is it?
High-pitched squeal when you apply the brakes.
Most likely: brake pad wear indicators. These are designed to squeal when pads are nearly worn out — a deliberate audible warning. Replace pads before they grind.
Squeak or squeal when the brakes are NOT applied.
Brake pad contacting rotor lightly, or a worn backing plate. Sometimes the wear indicator physically rubbing the rotor even without braking.
Grinding or growling noise.
Pads are worn past the point where the backing plate now contacts the rotor. Metal-on-metal. Stop driving and book in this week. Rotor damage is happening.
Squeak at low speed, disappears at high speed.
Often dust or surface glaze on the pads. Sometimes resolves after a few firm brake applications to clean the surface.
Squeak only in the morning, disappears after warming up.
Condensation on the rotors overnight. Minor surface rust that wipes off with the first few brake applications. Nothing to worry about.
Squeak only when reversing.
Common on European cars with wear sensors that work directionally. Pads need replacing soon.
When brake squeak is urgent
- Grinding noise. Immediate workshop visit. Rotor is being damaged.
- Squeal that has persisted for weeks and is getting louder. Pads nearly gone.
- Squeal accompanied by longer stopping distance. Pads below minimum thickness.
- Squeal with vibration through the pedal. Warped rotors.
When brake squeak is cosmetic
- Squeak in wet weather that dries up. Surface moisture interacting with the pad.
- Squeak only in morning that disappears. Overnight rust bloom.
- Squeak on certain pads (ceramic at low speed). Inherent characteristic of some pad materials.
- Brand new pads squeaking for the first 500 km. Pads bedding in.

Why cheap pads squeak more
Budget pads under $40 per pad dust heavily, glaze fast, and squeak more. Quality pads from Bendix, Ferodo, TRW, Akebono dust less and last longer. The upfront saving on cheap pads is lost on faster wear.
