The Five Sounds Your Car Shouldn’t Make (and What Each One Means)

Cars make noise. Engines hum, tyres roar, suspension thumps over potholes. The noises that matter are the new ones, the ones that weren’t there last month, and the ones that change with speed, load, or temperature. After years of diagnosing cars by ear before the scanner ever comes out, five categories of sound show up over and over. Learning to identify them by character is the difference between an early $200 fix and a late $2,000 repair. 

1. Grinding 

A grinding noise is the sound of metal contacting metal where it shouldn’t. The diagnostic value lies entirely in when it happens. 

Grinding only when braking. Brake pads have worn through to the backing plate and the steel is now scoring the rotor. The wear indicator squealed weeks ago and got ignored. Stopping distance is already compromised. Continued driving rapidly destroys the rotor and damages the caliper. Book in this week, not next. 

Grinding only when turning. A wheel bearing has failed. The bearings inside the hub assembly have lost their lubricant or shattered internally. The noise loads up when cornering forces shift weight onto that wheel. A failed bearing can let the wheel separate from the car. Days away from a tow, not weeks. 

Grinding when accelerating. A CV joint at the end of its life on a front-wheel-drive car. The CV boot probably tore weeks or months ago, grit got into the joint, and the bearings are now eating themselves. Listen for the noise loading up under acceleration with steering turned to one side. 

Grinding on starter engagement. The starter motor pinion gear is no longer fully engaging with the flywheel teeth. Starter or flywheel ring gear damage. The car will eventually fail to start at all. 

Grinding is rarely a “monitor it” noise. By the time you can hear it clearly, the damage is already happening fast. 

2. Clicking or ticking 

Ticking is a fast, repetitive sound — typically engine-speed related. Clicking is slower and usually wheel-speed related. The distinction matters. 

Engine-speed ticking from the top of the engine. Most often hydraulic lifters that have lost oil pressure on startup, recovering after 10 to 30 seconds. Common on engines with high-mileage oil intervals or a single grade of oil that’s too thick for cold starts. If it never goes quiet, the lifters have failed permanently and need replacing. 

Engine-speed ticking that gets faster with revs and louder with load. Exhaust manifold leak. The gasket between the head and the exhaust manifold has failed, or the manifold itself has cracked. Common on older Toyota and Ford engines. Not immediately dangerous but gets worse and eventually triggers oxygen sensor codes. 

Wheel-speed clicking that increases with road speed. A stone trapped in the tyre tread or a nail head protruding slightly. Look at each tyre for foreign objects. If found, a workshop can usually remove and patch. 

Slow clicking with steering on full lock. CV joints again. Lock-to-lock clicking is the classic FWD outer CV joint failure. Mainly a daily-driving annoyance until the joint actually separates. 

Single click from the dash when you turn the key, then nothing. Starter solenoid engaging but the starter motor not turning. Could be a flat battery, a failed solenoid, or a corroded earth strap. Jump start as a diagnostic: if it starts, the battery is likely the culprit. 

3. Humming or droning 

A continuous tone that rises with road speed and stays steady at constant speed. Almost always rotating components. 

Hum that rises with road speed, loudest at 80 to 100 km/h. Tyre roar from cupping wear patterns. Run your hand around each tyre, feeling for high and low spots in the tread blocks. Cupped tyres need replacing and the alignment needs checking, because the cupping itself was caused by suspension issues. 

Hum that changes pitch when you swerve gently left and right. Wheel bearing. Loading the bearing one way (weight transfers to it during a swerve) changes the contact angle inside the bearing, changing the noise. Pinpoint which corner of the car by which direction loads up the noise. 

Low droning that comes and goes with throttle application. Differential or transmission. On rear-wheel-drive cars and 4WDs, a tired diff makes a droning noise that peaks on a steady throttle at a specific speed. On automatics, a torque converter that’s beginning to fail can make similar noises. 

Hum from the dashboard area. Blower motor bearing on the air conditioning system. Becomes faster and louder over weeks. Usually fixable by replacing just the blower motor, which is much cheaper than letting the bearing seize and replacing the whole AC unit. 

4. Whining 

A whine is a higher-pitched continuous tone, usually rotating mechanical components under load. 

Whine that varies with engine RPM. Power steering pump on cars with hydraulic steering. Most common cause: low power steering fluid. Top up to spec, see if it goes quiet. If it doesn’t, the pump is failing and needs replacing. 

Whine that varies with road speed only, regardless of throttle. Transmission. Could be a worn gear set, low transmission fluid, or an early-stage failure of a torque converter. Diagnostic scan and fluid inspection first. 

Whine that comes in for a few seconds during gear changes on an automatic. Healthy. The torque converter is locking and unlocking. Background noise that you only notice when you start listening. 

Loud whine immediately after starting, then disappearing. Belt slip on the accessory drive. A worn or glazed belt fails to grip the alternator pulley until the rubber heats up and softens. Replace the belt. Cheap, easy. 

Whine from the back of the car only when turning under load. Limited-slip differential. The clutches inside the LSD are wearing. Eventually the LSD stops working as intended. Common on 4WDs that have done long highway kilometres. 

5. Knocking or thudding 

Knocks and thuds are the noises that most often signal serious failure. 

Knock from the engine that scales with RPM. Engine bottom-end damage. Connecting rod bearings or main bearings spinning. The car may still drive but the damage is escalating. Stop driving and get the car towed. 

Knock when going over bumps, only at low speed. Suspension. Worn sway bar end links, control arm bushes, or strut top mounts. Annoying but not safety-critical until the components start separating. Inspect on a hoist to find which. 

Thud when shifting from Park to Drive (or to Reverse) on an automatic. Worn transmission mounts, or a worn driveline component (universal joint, CV joint, or rear differential mount on a RWD car). 

Single loud knock under heavy braking, then nothing. Suspension component letting go — usually a sway bar end link snapping. The car still drives but the front suspension now thumps over every bump. 

Slow rhythmic thud at idle that synchronises with engine cycles. Spark plug working loose, or a more serious internal engine issue. Diagnose before driving further. 

A general rule 

Noises that scale with engine RPM are engine-related. Noises that scale with road speed are wheel, brake, suspension, or driveline. Noises that scale with neither and are constant are often electrical (fan motors, relays buzzing) or vacuum-related (intake leaks). 

If a noise is new, identify whether it scales with RPM or wheel speed first. That single observation narrows the diagnosis from “anywhere on the car” to “in this system.” Half the value of a good diagnostician is asking the right questions before the bonnet is even lifted. 

Frequently asked questions 

Should I drive with a new noise to see if it goes away? 

Grinding, knocking, or sudden whining warrant immediate inspection. Mild clicking or humming can be monitored for a few days while you book in. 

Why do some noises only happen in the morning? 

Cold engines have higher oil viscosity and tighter clearances. Many top-end noises (lifter tick, timing chain rattle) appear cold and disappear warm. Not always benign, but the cold-only character helps narrow the diagnosis

Can a workshop diagnose a noise from a phone recording? 

Sometimes. Recordings help narrow the category. Final diagnosis usually requires the car in front of a technician. 

Are noisy diesels always a problem? 

No. Diesels are inherently louder than petrol engines, especially older non-common-rail engines. New noises matter; baseline diesel clatter does not. 

Why did my car suddenly get quieter, not louder? 

Sometimes a noise disappears because the component has fully failed and stopped moving. Worth checking, not celebrating.
