The dealer says you need genuine car parts. The online store says theirs are “OEM equivalent.” The cheap eBay listing says “fits Toyota.” Three different prices, three different stories, and most of the time the honest answer doesn’t match what either side wants you to believe.
After fitting thousands of parts in both categories, here’s the unvarnished version.
What “genuine” actually means
The vehicle manufacturer supplies a genuine part through their parts division. It comes in branded packaging with the manufacturer’s part number. It carries the manufacturer’s warranty.
What genuine doesn’t necessarily mean: that the manufacturer made it. Most vehicle manufacturers do not produce their own filters, brake components, electrical sensors, or rubber components. They buy from specialist suppliers (Bosch, Denso, Mahle, NGK, ZF, Continental, Mann, Hella) and put their own branding on the box. A Mahle factory made the “Toyota” oil filter sitting on the dealer shelf, and it sometimes carries the Mahle logo on the actual filter.
This matters because the same Mahle filter, in its own packaging, sells for half the price at any decent auto parts retailer. It is the same part. The difference is the box.
What “OEM” means
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM part is one made by the same company that supplies the manufacturer, sold in the supplier’s own packaging. So a Mahle-branded oil filter that fits a Toyota engine is an OEM part.
OEM is genuinely the same component as the dealer’s “genuine” part, just without the dealer markup. For most maintenance items, OEM is the smart middle ground.
What “aftermarket” means
Aftermarket is everything else. Quality aftermarket parts (Bosch, Bendix, Ferodo, KYB, Monroe, Sachs, Gates) are designed to match or exceed OEM specifications. They are made by serious manufacturers, often the same ones who supply OEM contracts to other car brands. A Bosch alternator going into a Ford is aftermarket from Ford’s perspective and OEM from Volkswagen’s perspective. Same part. Same factory.
Then there is the budget aftermarket — generic-branded parts from manufacturers you’ve never heard of. Quality varies dramatically. Some are functional. Some fail within months.
Where genuine is actually worth it
A handful of categories genuinely justify the premium.
Body panels and exterior trim. Aftermarket bonnets, doors, and bumpers rarely fit as well as genuine. The panel gaps don’t line up, the paint doesn’t match perfectly, the mounting points are slightly off. For visible body work, genuine is usually worth the extra.
Safety-related electronics on modern cars. Airbag modules, ABS controllers, and crash sensors interact with the car’s network and need exact specification matching. Cheap aftermarket airbag modules have failed crash tests. This is not where to save money.
Software-coded modules. Many modern modules (BCM, ECU, transmission controllers) need to be coded to the specific vehicle. Genuine parts come pre-coded or are designed to accept the manufacturer’s coding tools. Aftermarket equivalents often need workarounds.
Anything where fitment precision affects function. Timing components on some engines (particularly Volkswagen and Audi) really do work better with genuine. The tolerances on tensioners and idlers are tight, and the consequences of failure are severe.
During the new-car warranty period, for parts that affect drivetrain. Not because the law requires it (it doesn’t) but because if a warranty claim ever arises, having genuine parts in the drivetrain removes one possible reason for a dealer to push back. Strategic, not legal.
Where OEM-quality aftermarket is the smarter choice
Most regular service items.
Oil filters. A Mahle, Mann, or Bosch filter is the same as genuine. Genuine costs roughly twice as much for no functional advantage.
Air filters. Same supplier story. Quality aftermarket is identical.
Cabin filters. Same.
Brake pads. Brake pads from Bendix, Ferodo, TRW, or Akebono perform identically to or better than genuine, often at half the price. Akebono pads are factory equipment on many Japanese cars; you can buy them in Akebono packaging for considerably less than the dealer charges for the same product in OEM packaging.
Spark plugs. NGK and Denso are factory equipment on most petrol engines worldwide. There is no advantage to buying them through a dealer at marked-up prices.
Brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid. Specification matters more than brand. Any fluid meeting the exact manufacturer spec (printed on the bottle) is correct. Castrol, Penrite, Valvoline, Liqui-Moly all produce fluids meeting OEM specifications.
Wheel bearings. Quality brands like SKF, FAG, and NSK supply OEM contracts. Their aftermarket-packaged bearings are identical.
Shock absorbers. KYB and Monroe are OEM suppliers for most of the volume car manufacturers. Their branded versions are the same part for less money.
Belts and hoses. Gates and Dayco are OEM suppliers. Same comment.
Where aftermarket bites back
Cheap budget aftermarket is where the real risk lives. Categories to never go budget on:
Brakes. Generic budget brake pads can have inconsistent friction characteristics, fade faster under heat, and wear rotors prematurely. The dollar saved per pad is paid back in early rotor replacement and worse stopping distance.
Suspension components. A budget aftermarket control arm bush might last 18 months instead of 5 years. A budget shock might fade after 30,000 km instead of 100,000 km. The labour to install both is the same, so cheap parts mean labour costs paid twice.
Engine internals. Generic gaskets, timing belts, water pumps. The labour to replace a timing belt is the same whether the belt cost $40 or $120. Choose the $120 belt from a known supplier every time.
Sensors and ignition components. Cheap oxygen sensors, cheap ignition coils, cheap MAF sensors. They fit, they sometimes work, and then they fail intermittently in ways that take hours of diagnostic time to chase. The savings disappear after the first diagnosis bill.
Fuel system. Cheap fuel pumps, cheap injectors. Fuel-related failures strand you on the side of the road.
The lifecycle cost question
The honest way to evaluate a part is total cost over its service life. A genuine oil filter at $28 versus an OEM-equivalent at $14 versus a budget brand at $6. The labour to fit any of them is identical. The genuine and OEM versions perform identically. The budget filter risks bypass-valve failure that can cause oil starvation. The arithmetic is clear: OEM-quality is the best total cost.
A genuine brake pad at $180 per pair versus a quality aftermarket like Bendix at $90 versus a budget eBay set at $35. Genuine and Bendix will both last around the same kilometres with similar feel. The budget set will be glazing within 5,000 km, eating into the rotor, and need replacing twice while the others are still good. Lifecycle cost favours quality aftermarket strongly.
What we usually fit
For customers who don’t specify a preference, the default is quality aftermarket or OEM-spec parts. Bosch, Mahle, NGK, KYB, Bendix, Gates, Sachs, Akebono, depending on what the application calls for. These are the brands that supply most of the world’s car factories. They are not a downgrade from genuine; they are usually the same product with different packaging.
When a customer requests genuine, we fit genuine. If they bring in their own cheap parts, we’ll fit them but cannot warranty the work. And where the application genuinely requires genuine — luxury cars where module coding or fitment precision matters — we say so and explain why
Frequently asked questions
Will fitting aftermarket parts void my new-car warranty?
No. The Australian Consumer Law is clear: a manufacturer cannot void a warranty over aftermarket parts unless they can prove the aftermarket part caused the failure being claimed. Fitting an aftermarket air filter cannot void your engine warranty unless the air filter is responsible for the engine failure.
The dealer says only genuine will fit. Is that true?
For body panels and some electronic modules, sometimes. For service items, almost never. Quality OEM-equivalent parts fit perfectly.
Why do dealers push genuine so hard?
Margin. Dealer parts departments are profit centres. The markup on genuine parts is typically 40 to 100 percent over what an independent workshop pays for the same brand-equivalent part.
Are reconditioned parts ever a good choice?
Yes, for some components. Alternators, starter motors, and some transmission parts are routinely reconditioned to OEM standard. Brand matters — Bosch reconditioned alternators are essentially as good as new.
Can I supply my own parts to a workshop?
Most workshops will let you, but won’t warranty the parts (only the labour). If you research carefully and buy quality brands online, this can save money. Buying cheap eBay parts and asking a workshop to fit them is a recipe for repeat work.
