Car Won't Start in Brisbane — Common Causes and Fixes
A car that won’t start is one of the most common emergency bookings we get. Most of the time it’s the battery. Sometimes it’s something else. This page walks through the common causes and what the repair typically costs.
First — what is it doing?
Nothing at all. No click, no crank.
Battery dead, battery terminal loose, major electrical fault, or key/immobiliser problem.
Click, click, click when you turn the key. No crank.
Battery low but not completely dead. Starter solenoid engaging but insufficient power to crank.
Cranks slowly but doesn’t start.
Battery weak. Compression low. Starter motor tired.
Cranks normally but doesn’t fire.
Fuel or ignition problem. Fuel pump, crank sensor, spark, or immobiliser.
Starts then immediately dies.
Fuel issue, immobiliser locking the fuel pump, or a vacuum leak at idle.

- Corroded or loose battery terminals. Clean and tighten — often fixes the problem for the price of a terminal cleaner.
- Failed crank angle sensor. Cranks but no fire. From $289 fitted.
- Fuel pump failure. Cranks but no fuel pressure. $489 to $989 depending on vehicle.
- Immobiliser fault. Key not recognised. Diagnostic scan required, repair varies.
- Fuel issue (low fuel, contaminated fuel, diesel in petrol or vice versa). Diagnostic and correction.
How to diagnose before calling
Lights and dash work?
Battery is partially alive. Probably not flat completely, but could be weak.
Lights dim significantly when you turn the key?
Battery definitely weak or starter drawing too much.
Absolute nothing — no lights, no dash, no click?
Battery dead or disconnected.
Recently had the battery disconnected for service?
Some cars need a relearn procedure after power loss. We handle this during servicing.
Jump-start first — then decide
If the car starts from a jump-start and runs fine, the battery was the culprit. Get it tested within a day — either it’ll accept a charge (some life left) or it’ll fail a load test (replacement time).
If it won’t jump-start, the fault is deeper than a flat battery.
