Dealer vs Independent Mechanic in Brisbane — Which Is Better?
“Can I service my new car at an independent mechanic without voiding the warranty?” is the most common question we get from new-car owners. The answer is yes — but there’s more to the comparison than just legal status.
The warranty question first
Australian Consumer Law is explicit. You can service your new car at any qualified mechanic. Log book servicing at a Repco Authorised Service Centre is ACCC-compliant — your new-car warranty remains intact.
The ACCC has published repeated guidance on this. If any dealer tells you otherwise, they are misrepresenting consumer law. Report it to the ACCC.
Where the comparison actually matters
Price
- Dealer: Typically $450 to $1,200 for a regular service depending on brand.
- Independent (Repco Authorised): Typically $239 to $489 for equivalent work.
- Savings: 30 to 60 percent on regular servicing.
- Multiply across 5 years and 50,000 km: $2,000 to $4,000 for most owners.
Quality of work
- Dealer advantages: Factory diagnostic equipment, brand-specific training, OEM parts always.
- Independent advantages: Same technician works on your car every visit (continuity), no service-writer commission structure pushing upsells, transparent pricing you can see before booking.
- Reality: A Repco Authorised independent has factory-level diagnostic tools and uses OEM or OEM-equivalent parts. The mechanical work is identical. The differences are operational, not technical.
Waiting times
- Dealer: Booking 2 to 3 weeks out is common for popular brands.
- Independent: Usually within a week.
Loan cars
- Dealer: Sometimes provides a courtesy car. Sometimes for a fee.
- Independent: Usually doesn’t. We don’t run a loan car fleet — we invested in tools and parts instead.
Parts
- Dealer: Genuine brand parts exclusively. Premium pricing.
- Independent: OEM-equivalent quality (often the same part from the same supplier in different packaging) at lower prices. Genuine available on request for the price difference.
Accountability
- Dealer: Corporate-run, service-writer structure, technician rarely speaks to customer.
- Independent: Usually owner-operated, technician often explains the work directly, complaints go to the person doing the work.
When the dealer is the right choice
Warranty repair work. If your car has a warranty issue (transmission failure, hybrid battery problem, electrical fault), the dealer handles the warranty claim. Independents can’t warranty-claim against the manufacturer.
Recall work. Manufacturers issue recalls through their dealer network. No cost to you.
Specific technical issues on rare models. Some cars have quirks only the brand specialist has seen.
If you’re leasing and the lease requires dealer servicing. Check the contract.
When the independent is the right choice
Regular servicing. Oil, filters, brake pads, fluids, general maintenance. Lower cost, same quality.
Out-of-warranty cars. No reason to pay dealer pricing on a 6+ year old car.
When you’ve been quoted dealer pricing and want a second opinion. We often quote half of dealer pricing on the same work.
When you want a relationship with a specific workshop. Dealer staff turnover is high. Independent workshops are stable.
The Repco Authorised distinction
- Audited annually for quality standards.
- Factory-grade diagnostic tools.
- OEM parts access through the national Repco network.
- ARC-licensed AC work.
- Training updated regularly.
- Warranty-compliant logbook servicing.
- 12-month workmanship warranty.
This is what we are. Same technical standard as a dealership, without the overhead costs that drive dealer pricing.
Our honest recommendation
- Under warranty, regular service: Independent with Repco Authorised accreditation. Same quality, 30 to 60 percent cheaper, warranty protected.
- Warranty claim: Dealer. They handle the claim with the manufacturer.
- Out of warranty: Independent, every time.
- Cheap car, simple work: Either. Independent is almost always better value.
- Prestige car, specific technical issue: Sometimes dealer, sometimes independent. Ask around.
