Brisbane summer punishes weak air conditioning. If your car’s AC is blowing lukewarm air, cycling on and off, or smelling musty when you turn it on, you need it looked at before December hits. Ultimate Car Expert is an ARC-licensed AC workshop (licence number AU66890), which means we are legally authorised to handle refrigerant — and the difference between a regas done right and a regas done wrong is whether the gas stays in the system for three years or three weeks.

Let’s be real, most car shops treat AC like an add-on. Something they’ll “check really quick” while doing something else. But here’s the truth:

Aircon regas pricing

The difference between R134a and R1234yf matters. R1234yf is a newer, more environmentally friendly refrigerant mandated on most cars built from 2017 onwards. It is roughly three times the cost of R134a, and the equipment to handle it legally is expensive. Workshops that charge “regas from $99” are either using the old gas in a new system (which damages it), not actually regassing properly, or hiding the real price until you arrive. We quote the real number up front.

Our AC repair process

What we will not do

We will not “top up” a system that has a leak: Every time you put gas into a leaking system, that gas ends up in the atmosphere. That’s illegal for us and bad for you. We find the leak first.

We will not mix refrigerants: R134a and R1234yf are not compatible. Mixing them destroys compressors. Some cheaper workshops cross the streams to save money — we don’t.

We will not use stop-leak additives: They block leaks by blocking the whole system. Repairs after stop-leak cost three times what they would have cost before.

Why a proper regas costs more than a cheap one

An ARC-licensed AC workshop has recovery machines for both refrigerant types, gauge manifolds, leak detectors, UV lamps, a vacuum pump, and the training to use all of it. The gas itself (particularly R1234yf) is expensive. Doing it properly means refrigerant stays in the system for three to five years. Doing it cheaply means you’re back in six months. The cheap option is almost always more expensive in the end.

When to service your AC

Every 2 to 3 years for a regas and system check, even if it’s still cold. Refrigerant naturally seeps out at a very low rate through hoses and seals — that’s normal. The AC getting weaker over time is inevitable without periodic service.

If you notice any of the symptoms above, bring it in sooner. Catching a leak at the O-ring stage is a $200 fix. Catching it at the compressor-destroyed stage is a $1,500 fix.

FAQs

About 60 to 90 minutes if there’s no leak. Longer if we need to leak-test first.

Three to five years in a healthy system. If it leaks out in 6 to 12 months, there’s a leak we need to find.

No. We supply everything. The price quoted includes gas, oil, vacuum and performance test.

Almost certainly R1234yf. We check the sticker under the bonnet to be sure before we start.

A straightforward regas, yes. A full repair involving compressor or condenser replacement usually needs a half day, sometimes a full day.

It is high. Most R1234yf regasses from an independent workshop sit between $300 and $450. If no leak or repair is needed, $2,400 is worth getting a second opinion.
