Suspension Repair in Brisbane — Jindalee Workshop
A Suspension wears gradually, which is why most drivers don’t notice until it is badly worn. The car still drives. It just bounces more, leans harder in corners, eats tyres on the inside edges, and feels unstable on uneven roads. By the time you notice, the shocks are usually 80 percent done and the car is genuinely less safe to drive.
Ultimate Car Expert does full suspension diagnostic and replacement at our Jindalee workshop — everything from a single shock absorber on a daily driver to a complete heavy-duty 4WD suspension upgrade for Land cruisers and Prados heading out to the Kimberley.
Signs your suspension needs work
- The car bounces more than twice after a speed bump: A healthy shock absorber allows one bounce and settles. Two or more means the damping is gone.
- It leans heavily in corners: Roll that feels like the car is tipping rather than taking a corner means worn shocks, tired springs, or broken sway bar links.
- Uneven tyre wear: Suspension issues cause the tyre to contact the road at the wrong angle. Worn inside or outside edges, cupping patterns, feathering — these all indicate suspension or alignment issues.
- Clunking over bumps: Usually bushes, ball joints, or sway bar end links. Sometimes a worn shock top mount. Usually not expensive to fix if caught early.
- Nose dives under braking: Front shocks worn out. The whole front end compresses under load and takes longer to recover.
- Bottoming out on dips: Shocks have lost compression damping. You feel the bump through the chassis because the shock isn’t absorbing it.
- Oil leaking from a shock: Shock has failed internally. Replace it (and the matching side — always replace shocks in pairs).
Suspension pricing — what to expect
- Shock absorber replacement (pair, front or rear) — standard passenger car: From $549 fitted, including alignment after. Premium brand shocks (KYB, Monroe OEM spec): $549 to $849 per pair. Performance or heavy-duty: $800 to $1,400 per pair.
- Complete shock replacement (all four) — standard car: From $1,049 fitted, including alignment.
- Coil spring replacement: From $199 per pair plus shock replacement (we recommend doing both together — worn shocks destroy new springs).
- Strut assembly replacement (complete — shock, spring, top mount pre-assembled): From $650 per pair fitted.
- Bush replacement: From $79 per bush. Control arm bushes typically $200 to $500 per side depending on whether the whole arm needs replacing or the bush can be pressed out.
- Ball joint replacement: From $220 per side.
- Sway bar link (drop link) replacement: From $169 per pair.
- Wheel bearing replacement: From $289 per side for most cars; more for 4WDs with sealed hub assemblies.
All prices include alignment after, because suspension work changes the geometry and the alignment must be reset.
Suspension Repairs & Steering Services
Your car’s suspension system is responsible for more than just a smooth ride—it plays a crucial role in handling, braking, and safety. At our auto repair shop, we specialize in diagnosing and repairing suspension issues for all types of vehicles. Whether you’re hearing unusual noises, feeling every bump in the road, or experiencing poor steering response, we’re here to restore your vehicle’s performance and comfort.
Why Suspension Matters – Repairs, Upgrades & Servicing
The suspension system connects your vehicle to its wheels and supports your car’s weight. It absorbs shocks from the road and ensures consistent contact between the tyres and the road surface. When your suspension is working properly, your car handles well, rides smoothly, and stays safe in emergency situations.
A faulty suspension system can lead to:
- Uneven tyre wear
- Poor handling and steering response
- Increased stopping distance
- Vehicle drifting or pulling to one side
- Uncomfortable or bouncy ride
Components We Inspect and Repair
Your suspension system includes several interconnected parts, and we inspect each one thoroughly:
- Shock Absorbers and Struts: These components control the movement of springs and keep your tyres in contact with the road. Worn shocks or struts can cause bouncing and reduced control.
- Control Arms: These link the wheels to the frame and help maintain wheel alignment and smooth up-down motion.
- Ball Joints: These pivot points allow the suspension to move while steering. If they wear out, you may hear clunking noises or feel instability.
- Bushings: Rubber or polyurethane parts that cushion joints and reduce vibrations. Worn bushings can cause excessive play and noise.
- Springs: Coil or leaf springs support your car’s weight and absorb road shock.
- Sway Bars (Stabilizer Bars): These reduce body roll during cornering. Damaged links or bushings affect stability.

Honest Advice, Clear Pricing
4WD suspension upgrades
Brisbane’s west has a strong 4WD community. Customers from Kenmore, Moggill, Brookfield, Bellbowrie and Anstead regularly bring us Prados, Hiluxes, Landcruisers, Rangers and Patrols for suspension upgrades before outback trips.
- Standard lift kit (2-inch): From $1,899 fitted. Heavier-duty shocks, upgraded springs rated for your vehicle weight plus load. Legal in QLD without engineering if correctly fitted.
- Heavy-duty 2-inch lift with load-rated springs for towing: From $2,200 fitted.
- Larger lifts (3-inch and over): Requires engineering certificate. We quote case by case.
- Brands we fit: Old Man Emu (ARB), Tough Dog, Pedders, Bilstein, King Springs. We tell you honestly which suits your vehicle, your usage, and your budget.
The wrong lift kit on a touring vehicle is worse than no lift at all. If you’re towing a caravan, your rear springs need to handle the tow-ball weight without sagging. If you’re hitting corrugations, you need shocks rated for sustained high-frequency use without fading. We ask what you’re doing with the vehicle before recommending parts.
The suspension diagnosis process
- Road test: We drive the vehicle over a mix of roads — smooth suburban, patchy main road, speed bumps, cornering. The technician is feeling for what’s actually happening, not just reading a code.
- Visual inspection on the hoist: Shock leaks, torn bush boots, worn ball joints, perished sway bar links, bent control arms, damaged rims, oil on the steering rack.
- Bounce test: Push down hard on each corner. A healthy shock damps the bounce after one cycle. A worn shock cycles two or three times.
- Load test: Move each suspension component through its range to check for play, clunk, or resistance.
- Quote: What’s worn, what can wait, what must be replaced for the car to be safe and pass a Safety Certificate. Your call on scope.
What's "worn enough to replace"
- Shocks: visible oil leak, failing the bounce test, or over 120,000 km on the original shock (generally they are all tired by then).
- Ball joints: detectable play (we lift the wheel, rock it, and feel for movement in the joint).
- Bushes: visible cracking, tearing, separation from the metal sleeve.
- Wheel bearings: roaring noise that changes with cornering load, or detectable play at the wheel.
- Sway bar links: rattle over bumps, visible ball separation from the socket.
Anything that makes noise, leaks, or shows measurable play is worn enough to replace.
Why we match components
Suspension works as a system. Replace one shock and leave the other — the car sits unevenly. Replace shocks without inspecting springs — the new shocks fail early because they’re fighting tired springs. Replace front shocks and ignore the rear — the handling balance is off.
We tell you honestly what needs doing. Sometimes a single component is all that’s required. Sometimes the whole corner needs rebuilding. We explain which and why.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do shocks last?
80,000 to 150,000 km depending on road conditions and vehicle type. 4WDs that see corrugated roads wear shocks faster. Daily drivers on smooth suburban roads get the longer end of that range.
Do I have to replace shocks in pairs?
Yes. A new shock on one side and an old shock on the other throws the car’s handling off and is unsafe.
Why does alignment need to be done after suspension work?
Changing shocks, springs, or any steering component changes the angles the wheels sit at. Without re-alignment, tyres wear unevenly and the car can pull to one side.
Can you do a suspension lift that passes QLD roadworthy?
2-inch lifts on 4WDs are legal without engineering if correctly fitted with compliance-certified components. Larger lifts require engineering. We work within what’s legal.
How long does suspension work take?
Single shock replacement: 2 hours. Full shock replacement plus alignment: 4 to 6 hours. Full 4WD lift kit: 6 to 8 hours (often a full day).
